DOMINICA. ISLAND BREAKS WITH JAPAN ON WHALING ISSUE. ROSEAU - Dominica
will no longer vote with Japan in favor of commercial whaling, the prime minister said. The decision appeared to be a setback
for Japanese efforts to overturn a 22-year-old ban on whaling.

2008. 'WHALING COMMISSION LOOKS FOR COMPROMISE.' The International Whaling Commission is seeking a diplomatic solution to
whale hunting at its annual meeting.' "For years members have divided and meetings have been characterized by
confrontation" 'The International Whaling Commission is an organization of 80 countries established in 1946 that set rules
on whaling activities and promotes scientific research. Its resolutions are nonbinding, however.' 'Brazil and Argentina will
ask the commission to approve a whale sanctuary in the south Atlantic Ocean. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet is planning
to do the same along her nation's coast'.
